Sei que é chato vir com esses textos sem tradução mas esse do Nick Carroll respondendo as comparações do Steve Shearer com Lewis Samuels é impagavel.

I would actually agree to do a webcast on credit if it involved being able to mock Shearer's incredible bulbous head and ludicrously wispy beard to a worldwide audience.

Not only is he the funniest surf journo since Jarratt, he is also the ugliest.

For those of us struggling to perceive the differences between shearer and lewis samuels, one is an only child from just north of SF with a 145+ IQ and a degree in cognitive science from UCSD whose parents have collaborated on a couple of very successful baby health books and who writes his columns from "above" the culture, very Berkeley American, very NorCal vs SoCal -- sparkling writing disguising a rather moralistic stance on the behaviour of his fellow humans...a kind of intellectual disgust which plays well when contrasted with the not-so-brilliant surf industry.

The other, well I don't know about the tertiary ed and parentage etc other than what he's told us here over the past year or so, but despite the Outsider tag (which will grow increasingly hard to maintain I suspect) he seems to write very much from the gut, actually inside the culture rather than outside, very Old Aussie, relishing a working-class stance and making fun of everyone without moralising too much, and wearing his heart on his sleeve when it comes to things he feels praiseworthy and otherwise.

Very distinct differences in tone and coming at the subject matter from quite different angles, seems to me anyway.

A simpler way to tell 'em apart: whose subjects would be more likely to wanna punch 'em? Probably Lewis, 'cause his putdowns sometimes feel really personal. With shearer, well he said it, it's not bitterness, it's LOVE....

By contrast, here’s how the ASP deals with its webcast rights:

It leases the rights to each WCT event franchisee for US$20,000 an event.

It then adds another US$20,000 surcharge which gives the event people the right to flog extra ad space.

That’s US$400,000 per year, which sounds a lot. Truth is, it’s still only a drop in the bucket.

ASP and event sources consistently claim figures of up to a million unique users per event, more at times when an event hits a peak or bungs on something special for the punters. This puts the webcasts at the top of the surf web media heap, roughly equal with the USA-based Surfline.com.

Think about that for a moment. If Surfline.com made only $400,000 a year from its operation, do ya reckon it’d still be in business? Hell no! Its turnover – from advertisers and paid subscriptions – is well into the millions.

It makes you wonder just how much money the events are generating from the webcasts.

The events really dont cost the surf brand host anything. Let's take this years rip curl pro as an example.it was co-sponsored by ford, snickers, 'melbourne', and many other smaller brands (chiko roll etc). they probably put in 300g's each... at the moment the only way ford or snickers can get into the surf market is via the event sponsor - not the asp. so it's the surf brands making money from the big corpo's - not the surfers!

One of the most contentious aspects of the current tour is the number of athletes - 45 - being too many. In an interview with The Australian while passing through Sydney this week, ASP CEO Brodie Carr said the number will be reduced, probably to 32 or 36, but not next year.

"We've got guys who are now qualifying for next year," he said. "It would be unfair of us to turn around and say, you're off. But I think definitely numbers will be smaller in 2011."

[Unfortunately for ESPN, they don’t have a buyer. Never did. Indeed, they’re trying to sell it to the surf industry.

Perhaps they are hoping the surf industry will respond thus: “Oh OK, here’s $40 million a year of money we don’t have so you can white-ant the world tour that we’ve just spent a decade and a half reshaping in our image.”

They’ve had a few bites, notably from Quiksilver. You can see why Quik might be a little more interested than others; their top young American star, Dane Reynolds, is struggling on the WCT, and their all time King, Kelly Slater, is off the 10th world title run he was expected to make in 2009. If Dane’s not there and Kelly’s bored, world tour-wise they’ve got nothing.

Plus of course Kelly’s energetic manager Terry Hardy has been a central figure in chucking the “float” out there like nobody else.

But otherwise? Huh.

Things like this have been “floated” before. One recalls the IS Tour idea of 1999, “floated” by Derek Hynd with the tacit support of Jack McCoy and a number of never-quite-named wealthy backers; the Super League of 1996, “floated” by Graham Cassidy as an alternative ASP; the stand-alone Triple Crown of 1983, which never quite “floated”, but managed to ruin the career of Hawaiian great Dane Kealoha in the process.]

AI, Joel Parko and Cory Lopez showed up on a jetski and sat on the shoulder cheering as the Hobgoods, a couple of hot young locals, and about 20 desperate wannabees wrestled with the bouncy barrels. Man! Why does every lame-o with a tattoo think he’s gonna become a Surf Star by falling off on the wave of the morning before the quarters get underway??
